Getting your first tattoo is a big milestone/commitment and for many people, it's a mix of excitement and nervous energy. How to Prepare Before Your Appointment
A little preparation goes a long way toward making your session more comfortable:
Get a full night of rest the night before
Eat a solid meal 1–2 hours before your appointment
Stay hydrated throughout the day
Avoid alcohol or blood thinners for 24 hours prior
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area
Bring ID, a phone charger, and headphones (if you’d like to zone out during the session)
What Happens When You Arrive at the Studio
Once you arrive at Zen Tattoo Studio, you’ll be greeted by your artist and our team. If you haven’t already seen the design beforehand, this is when your artist will share the tattoo they’ve been working on for you. You’ll have the opportunity to review it in detail, collaborate with the artist, and make any changes you'd like, this step ensures the final design aligns perfectly with your vision.
After finalizing the artwork, we’ll move into the stencil and sizing stage. The stencil will be printed and carefully adjusted to ensure it fits your body correctly and flows naturally with your anatomy. Placement is everything, and we’ll work with you to get it exactly right before beginning the tattoo.
At Zen, cleanliness, comfort, and professionalism are always top priorities, we want you to feel supported from the moment you walk in to the moment your tattoo is complete.
What It Feels Like: The Tattooing Process
Let’s address the elephant in the room: yes, it does hurt, but it’s manageable. Most people describe the feeling as a scratch or mild burning sensation. The intensity will vary depending on placement and your pain tolerance, but breaks are always welcome.
Your artist will regularly check in with you, and you’re free to listen to music, chat, or just breathe and zone out. We’ve found that once the initial nerves pass, most clients relax into the process.

After the Tattoo: Bandaging & Immediate Care
Once your tattoo is complete, the artist will clean the area and apply a bandage or wrap. You'll be given aftercare instructions (both verbal and written) tailored to the type and placement of your tattoo.
You might feel fatigued afterward, especially if your session was long, but this is completely normal.
