A small fine line tattoo at Zen Tattoo Studio usually takes two to three hours, while a full sleeve in black and grey realism takes about five full days. Large projects are booked as full days, often back to back, so a whole section heals at once. Your exact timeline is set at your free consult.

How long does a tattoo take? The short answer
It depends on three things: size, detail and placement. A short line of script and a photorealistic portrait can be the same size and still need very different amounts of time. Small work is measured in hours. Large scale realism is measured in full days.
What you are really planning is two clocks. One is time in the chair. The other is time between sessions on the same area, while your skin heals. Both matter when you are working out time off, travel or an event on the calendar.
Time in the chair by size at Zen Tattoo Studio
These are the timelines we plan with at Zen Tattoo Studio. Your artist confirms the real number for your design at the consult.
| Project | Time in the chair | Sessions at Zen | Best fit at Zen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small fine line | About two to three hours | One | Oxy |
| Large fine line or floral | Multiple full days | Several, planned at the consult | Oxy |
| Outer arm, shoulder to wrist | Three full days | Three, then two days on the inside to finish a sleeve | Igor, Devon or Luis |
| Full sleeve | About five full days | Five back to back, or three outside and two inside | Igor, Devon or Luis |
| Full back, chest or body suit | Multiple full days | Planned section by section at the consult | Igor, Devon or Luis |
What a full day looks like at Zen Tattoo Studio
The artist floor at Zen Tattoo Studio, where a full day starts at 11am.
A full day starts at 11am. Your design is ready when you arrive, printed in several sizes, with the full layout laid out so you and your artist can check scale and placement on your body. Sizing and the stencil take about 30 to 60 minutes, and large projects can need several stencil sections lined up to fit together. Tattooing usually starts between 11:30 and noon.
Through the day, you take short breaks of 10 to 15 minutes. There is no scheduled lunch, but if you want one, we accommodate it. Our guide on what to eat before a tattoo covers how to fuel a long day. Most full days finish around 6:30 to 7pm, so plan on about seven and a half to eight hours at the studio.
Not every day is the same length, and that is on purpose. How long a session runs depends on the design, the placement and how your artist has split the work into sections. Day two might end a little earlier because a big section is planned for day three. The goal is a strategy for the whole design, not equal hours on the clock.
How many days does a sleeve, back or body suit take?
A full sleeve at Zen Tattoo Studio takes about five full days. You choose how to book them: all five back to back, or three days on the outside of the arm, shoulder to wrist, and then two days on the inside.
A full back, a chest panel or a body suit takes multiple full days. Large projects are booked on back to back days, and we finish a whole section before moving on so it heals in one go.
Ashley's suit shows what large scale really means. She travelled from Wisconsin to finish a black and grey full body tattoo with Igor, after years of work in other places. You can read her full body story. If you are planning a sleeve, our sleeve planning guide walks through how the composition is mapped before the first day.
Fine line can be large scale too. A small fine line tattoo with Oxy usually takes two to three hours, while a large fine line or floral design can take multiple full days. Large realism is booked with Igor, Devon or Luis.

How long should you wait before tattooing the same area again?
A new tattoo is a skin wound. Health New Zealand puts healing at about two to six weeks, and advises agreeing on a sensible gap between sessions so redness and swelling settle first (Health New Zealand). Cleveland Clinic notes that the surface usually settles after about three weeks, the top layer of skin heals by around two months, and larger tattoos can stay red or swollen longer (Cleveland Clinic).
At Zen Tattoo Studio, we wait at least two weeks before going back into an area that has already been tattooed, and only once it has healed. The exact timing depends on how your skin heals.
While you heal, follow your aftercare, hold off on the gym and swimming as advised, and tell your artist about anything unusual. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that some skin reactions can appear up to three weeks after a tattoo (AAD).
Do you need a touch up?
Usually not. Our artists build strong contrast into the tattoo so it heals well the first time. If a touch up is needed, we wait for at least two weeks of healing and aim to do it within 30 days. Some clients are invited back for a healed photoshoot, always with their consent, and those photos are shared on our social pages.
What makes a tattoo take longer
- Style and detail. Smooth black and grey realism with soft gradients takes longer than bold linework of the same size.
- Placement and the section plan. How long a session runs depends on the design, the placement and how your artist splits the work into sections. Our tattoo pain chart shows which areas tend to be more sensitive.
- Cover ups. The new design has to work over existing work, which often adds time. See our cover up guide.
- You on the day. Sleep, food and water all change how comfortably you sit through a long day.
How to plan your time off, travel and your calendar
- Clear the whole day. A full day runs from 11am to around 6:30 or 7pm, so do not book anything tight afterward.
- Book early. Our artists usually book one to five months ahead.
- Travelling in? Large projects are booked on back to back days, and clients receive 25 to 30% off at a hotel five minutes from the studio. We go over travel details when you book.
- Plan around your season. Fall and winter suit healing for many clients, as our post on the best time to get a tattoo explains.
- Leave healing time before a vacation, a wedding or a beach trip.
